This policy explains what Where is this place (https://whereisthisplace.info) collects and why. It is operated by junwei000; questions go to support@whereisthisplace.info.
What happens to the photos I upload?
- The photo is sent to our server only to be analysed and is not stored there: no copy is kept after the answer is returned.
- We first read GPS metadata in the file. If there is none, the image is sent to an AI model through OpenRouter for that one analysis. OpenRouter and the model provider process it under their own terms.
- A small thumbnail is kept in your browser's local storage so your result page can show it. It never reaches our server, and clearing site data removes it.
What do you keep about a result?
- Before you sign in, the full answer is sealed (encrypted) and held in your browser; we can only read it again if you bring it back within 30 days.
- When you sign in, the result is saved to your account: the country preview, the full answer (place, coordinates, clues) and whether you have unlocked it. You can see these under My locations.
- For every analysis we log the time, IP address, language, outcome, country, confidence and duration, so we can enforce limits, stop abuse and debug failures.
What account data do you keep?
Your email address, name and avatar (from email sign-up or Google), sign-in sessions, your unlock balance, and orders and subscriptions. Payments are handled by Stripe; we never see or store full card numbers.
Cookies and similar storage
We use cookies for sign-in sessions and your language choice, and browser local storage for pending results and thumbnails. If analytics is turned on, it measures page visits in aggregate.
Who else receives data?
Only the services needed to run the site: Cloudflare (hosting and database), OpenRouter and the model provider (analysis), Stripe (payments), Google (if you sign in with Google), an email provider (sign-in emails) and the map tile host (OpenFreeMap) when a map loads. We do not sell personal data.
How long is it kept? Can I delete it?
Account data and saved locations stay until you delete them or ask us to. Email support@whereisthisplace.info from your account address to get a copy of your data or to delete your account; deleting the account also deletes your saved locations.
Your responsibilities
Only upload photos you are allowed to share, and do not use the service to locate or track a person. See the terms of service.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too.
