What is Where is this place?

Where is this place is a photo location finder. You upload one JPG, PNG or WebP image and it tells you where the photo was most likely taken: the country straight away, and the exact place, coordinates and the clues behind the answer once you sign in.

Who makes it?

The site is built and maintained by junwei000 on GitHub, who also posts as @aiwei00 on X. It is an independent project and is not affiliated with OpenRouter, OpenAI or any map provider.

How does it find a location?

  1. GPS metadata first. Many phones and cameras store latitude and longitude in the photo's EXIF data (the GPSLatitude and GPSLongitude tags documented by Exiv2). If they are present, that is the answer — no AI is involved.
  2. Vision AI when there is no GPS. The photo is sent to GPT-6 Luna through OpenRouter, which compares architecture, signs, vegetation, terrain and light with places it knows and returns up to three candidate locations with a confidence level.
  3. A map to check it. Results open on an interactive globe drawn with OpenFreeMap tiles and OpenStreetMap data.

How reliable are the answers?

GPS coordinates are only as good as the device that wrote them, and metadata can be edited. AI answers are estimates: distinctive landmarks and street scenes work well, while close-ups, interiors and generic landscapes can be ambiguous. We have not published an accuracy benchmark, so treat every result as a lead to verify, not as proof.

How is it paid for?

Analysing a photo is free and needs no account. Seeing the exact place requires signing in; new accounts may receive free unlocks, and further unlocks are sold individually, in a pack of 3, or as a monthly plan. See pricing.
